Fairness from atop the flagger stand is one of the most valuable symbols of authority for a racetrack, and Derek Molloy takes the challenge seriously.
Molloy grew up watching his dad race enduros at Sunshine Speedway in the late 1980's. He was part of the sweep crew, ran in the hornet class for 16-19 year-olds, and raced enduros before driving the pace truck.
But it was once he began working for several race series that he found himself on top of the flagger's stand.
His resume includes the Southern Sportsman Series, Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series, Gulf Coast Modifieds, Extreme Modifieds, and tracks like East Bay Raceway where he got his start in the fag stand in 2009.
"I've been from Lake City to New Smyrna Speedway, Orlando, and Desoto, and spent the last year flagging at Showtime Speedway," Molloy said.
He's worked with 410 Sprints and Lucas Dirt Late Models Series, FASCAR, with the Sunbelt Late Model Series, Goodyear Late Models, go karts, and the TBARA Sprints.
"I'm excited," Molloy said of his move to Citrus County Speedway and Track.
"The fun thing about Citrus is it's a short track," he said. "I've seen some really good racing there.
Molloy will now focus on bringing his level of fairness to Citrus. Molloy is also a softball umpire.
"I feel if you're guilty of an infraction, I'm going to say so. I'm going to do my job."
